Multilingual Guide to Shikoku, the Pilgrimage Island of Japan

on the Web in five languages

A published Japanese-English guidebook to the island of Shikoku, emphasizing its culture and history, is now available by permission on the Web in English, Japanese and French at this Website as well as in Spanish and Dutch at European Websites. This page is partly in Japanese and its original source is as follows:

Shikoku Bilingual Guidebook
『ようこそ四国へ 英和ガイドブック』
by Akiko Takemoto (武本明子) and Steve McCarty
Takamatsu, Japan: Biko Books (October 1993)

Most of the chapters are bilingual, with English and Japanese alternating for those studying either language. In this way, non-Japanese people can learn Japanese language and culture at the same time, while Japanese people learning English can also learn how to express their cultural heritage in English.

Click to view a complete French translation of the guidebook. Librarian Juan Carlos Rodriguez Santos at the University of Seville in Spain has translated it into Spanish, and Geert Drieghe at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium has translated it into Dutch. Many thanks for their collaboration! This page was first made in 1997, so apologies if European links do not work.
