CALL Review - Winter 2007

One of the most productive applications of this free podcasting service is that teachers can podcast their classes or lectures so that students can revisit the class in their own time, either to review the material or if the student was unable to attend the class. One of the best examples of this can be found at http://odeo.com/channel/4983/view
or http://odeo.com/channel/93074/view. Both of these coursecasts are produced by Professor Steve McCarty and allow students unrivaled access to audio learning materials. I attended a workshop by Professor McCarty two years ago in Japan where he promoted the benefits of podcasting. I would recommend that any teacher with a regular set of classes or lectures look into these easy to use facilities which extend the contact period between students and teacher to more than just the duration of a single lecture.

In the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) domain, Professor Steve McCarty of Osaka Jogakuin College asserts that gc content creation also makes [students] part of the target language community, not just passive recipients or spectators of a foreign culture, which benefits their motivation and development of a bilingual identityh (McCarty cited in Sener, 2007b, sec. 2, para. 1). While teaching an intensive course on translation at Matsuyama Shinonome College, McCarty (2005a) invited two Chinese and two Japanese students to engage in a discussion that was recorded as a podcast. The students were asked to each explain five given proverbs, in English as well as in their native language, as part of an attempt to explore if there was a similar way of thinking in the three cultures. The proverbs were: (1) Actions speak louder than words; (2) Advice when most needed is least heeded; (3) Look before you leap; (4) Penny wise, pound foolish; and (5) Ignorance is bliss. McCarty also maintains his own publicly accessible, bilingual podcast feed and blog, Japancasting (McCarty, 2006), targeted at those studying either Japanese or English as a foreign language. The podcast episodes cover Japanese culture, history, folklore, and comparative religions, as well as contemporary social issues such as the education system and the rights of minorities (e.g. foreigners) in Japan. In many of the podcasts, students from Osaka Jogakuin College serve as voice actors or interviewees, and in some cases present their own creative work/scripts. Although they remain anonymous, the students are excited and motivated by the prospect of broadcasting to a worldwide, Internet audience (McCarty, 2005b; Sener, 2007b) ... it is clear that these new practices allow and support key educative functions for learners as follows: ... 2. To demonstrate communicative competencies such as create scripts and record podcasts on a range of  cross-cultural themes and concepts, sometimes in a foreign language (McCarty, 2005a, 2005b ...)

The approach used in the Blended Learning Classroom (BLC) is similar to the
ghybridh procedure used by McCarty (2005) in Japan with a face to face group in a class
about online education in which voice technologies and a learning management system
was used to communicate with mentors in different points of the world.
